The short answer is, it simply depends on a few things and the individual puppy itself. A rough estimate is that it can be anything from a couple of weeks to a few months, it simply depends on the training methods used and the amount of effort the owner is putting in to implementing these steps. The most important aspect of potty training your pup, however, is that you have plenty of patience and you are consistent, consistent, consistent.

You need to have this area as the same spot for the pup for the first few weeks, so make sure it is convenient to the entire household and not just the pup.

How long it will take to potty train your puppy will depend on how often you can spot the signs that your pup needs to go. Puppies have immature bladders and bowels, therefore will need to go within the first 20 minutes of eating and drinking. They will also need to eliminate immediately after they have awoken from a nap and also after playing. Watching your pups behaviours you will see that the pup will sniff the ground and circle a few times prior to relieving itself. The faster you are on to getting the pup to its designated area, the faster your pup will learn where it needs to go.
As I mentioned earlier patience seriously is one of the MOST important ingredients when you are trying to potty train your puppy. Using positive reinforcement each time your pup gets it right, will have your puppy associating the behaviour with good things. Just as it is important to reward when they get it right, you also must reprimand when they get it wrong. Yelling or hitting the dog is NOT effective. By using the same phrase such as “Naughty Girl” each time the pup does something wrong, it will soon learn the difference between favoured behaviours versus negative behaviour.
This is an issue that can overwhelm a lot of new puppy owners, but there are simple and effective methods that should not break the bank available to you for extra help.
